The Camp Granada Foundation was founded by a group of passionate volunteers who have worked together at Camp Granada each summer for many years.

After recognizing the need for additional support and a direct line to camp, our mission is to provide financial and programmatic assistance to Camp Granada and our campers, including camper scholarships and donations of supplies.

We Believe

Kids learn by doing

Diabetes doesn’t hold you back!

Camp is for everyone

Camp Granada is more than just a weeklong, overnight summer camp—it's a life-changing experience for kids living with diabetes. Run by the American Diabetes Association, we welcome kids primarily from Central and Southern Illinois to the beautiful 4H Memorial Camp nestled inside the scenic Allerton Park in Monticello, IL.

Every summer, over 100 campers, ages 8 to 16, join us for a week of fun, supported by an incredible team of 80+ dedicated volunteers who provide the best care and support for our campers.

From medical professionals to camp counselors, our staff works together to create a safe, fun, and empowering environment for kids to just be kids. All while seeing diabetes in action among their peers.

Our multi-disciplinary cabin teams include:

Counselors

Often former campers with Type 1 diabetes themselves, counselors ensure your child’s safety, happiness, and success at camp. They lead activities, provide support, and create a fun, welcoming environment for kids with diabetes.

Each cabin team includes at least two counselors. Younger cabins will also have a counselor-in-training (CIT).

Medical Staff

Medical students and residents serve as cabin clinicians to provide medical care, oversee camper health, and collaborate with counselors to support activities and manage any medical or behavioral needs, creating a secure and positive environment.

Each cabin team includes one or two cabin clinicians, with a licensed Attending Physician providing oversight.

Nursing Staff

Nursing students assist with medical care, medication administration, and diabetes education, while providing emotional support and ensuring campers stay engaged and active in all camp activities.

Each cabin team includes one nursing student with a licensed Nurse providing oversight and administering all medication.

Dietetic Staff

Dietetic interns assist with meal planning, provide guidance on carbohydrate counting and healthy food choices, and lead fun, interactive nutrition education to support campers in managing their diabetes.

Each cabin team includes one dietetic intern, with a licensed Dietitian providing oversight.

Social Workers

Licensed social workers provide emotional support and guidance to help campers navigate challenges related to diabetes, peer relationships, and other behaviors that arise at camp.

They support the entire camp community, offering individual counseling, leading group activities, and assisting staff as needed to ensure a positive and inclusive experience for everyone.

How You Can Help

All donations go directly to Camp Granada!

Camper Scholarships

  • Registration for Camp Granada is $825 per camper this year. Donated funds are used to support families who have been accepted to Camp Granada, but do not have the means to pay the registration. We work directly with the American Diabetes Association to fill in the financial gaps to get as many campers as possible.

Program + Medical Supplies

  • Donations help purchase program materials (nametags, water bottles, tie-dye kits, etc.) as well as medical supplies that are not donated by companies themselves (glucose tabs, ketone tests, first aid supplies).

Highest Need

  • If you do not have a preference, we will use your donations where they are. needed most for the next session of Camp Granada.

Why Camp Granada?

Being surrounded by a hundred other kids who knew—I mean, really understood—what I was going through day after day…that was life-changing for me. I learned how to live with diabetes instead of how to deal with diabetes.
